I'm generally horrible with "favorite movie" lists. As soon as I'm done, I realize I've left five titles off the list that "have" to be included... Then I can't decide what should be removed... I ultimately just abandon the idea - too frustrated that I can't make a decision. That said, I realize the value of a list as they have helped introduce me to many films I may have never seen otherwise. I'm sure Eddie Muller could include hundreds of his favorite film noirs - but his list of ten favorites opened a door for me, that I've never closed.
With that said, here is a list of ten Criterion Collection titles that I love. They aren't the "best" or necessarily my "favorite" - but they have stuck with me and I've watched them often.
L'Atalante
A great romantic movie - perfectly capturing the ups and downs of young newlyweds on the Seine.
Picnic At Hanging Rock
One of the most haunting films I've ever seen - simply due to the pacing, the music and cinematography.
Lonesome
The thrill of Coney Island and cheering for two people to make it.
Babette's Feast
I just love the simplicity of this story and the characters...
A Journey to the Beginning of Time
Rarely has a film transported me back in time like this one. Not to the prehistoric setting of the film, but to the time when curiosity and exploration fueled my childhood.
Where is the Friend's Home?
One of the truly great family films.
The Emigrants
A great film about the hope & opportunity that coming to America once offered.
The River
An absolutely beautiful film.
The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg
The ability of Jacques Demy to pull off this film.... It touches me every time I watch it.
Nights of Cabiria
This film introduced me to Fellini. I still think Cabiria is one of my favorite characters in film history.
