Somewhere along the way the medium of films became complicated. An artistic endeavor that balances economics, focus groups and the opinions of hundreds of voices. Investors, high concepts, marketing strategies... "We'll fix it in post...." The results can miraculously still be great on occasion, but the auteur theory now feels like a concept of a bygone era.
When someone says "they don't make them like they used to" sometimes I think about the films of Eric Rohmer. His "Tales of the Four Seasons" are simple films about love - and life. Roger Ebert once wrote "A Rohmer film is a flavor that, once tasted, cannot be mistaken." This Thanksgiving, if you would like something different, simpler, Autumn Tale is wonderful.
