The first time I watched Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, I don't think I ever envisioned it being a film I would return to every year. I rented the DVD, back when that was a thing, after reading a Roger Ebert review. I found it charming, but it took some patience to find the humor. It's not a silent film, but there are not many scenes that rely on dialogue. The visual gags and memorable characters all stuck with me. The following summer, I decided to revisit the film - and it was as if I was returning to a favorite vacation spot.

I've watched this film almost every summer since then. I still find it charming - and probably as close as I'll ever get to vacationing at a French beachside hotel.
