Josef von Sternberg is best knows for his films with Marlene Dietrich, but I've never seen anything quite like the film he made with Gene Tierney. The Shanghai Gesture apparently required over 30 revisions ordered by the Hays Office before it could be released - but what remains is still a feast for the eyes and wild in every way.
